Look for the Helpers

Today has been one of those days; and, ONE of THOSE days. When it begins at 6:30 am by a frantic neighbor over finding her cat dead at her doorstep, to a wheel almost coming off your car due to a bad wheel-bearing, to your own dog being terminally ill. You would think I would want a redo. But, I don't.

I don't because of THESE people ( and a hundred more not photographed ). While foster children are the stars of Least of These Carolinas, 12 Hours of Christmas, it's the Executive Director, Susanna Owens Kavanaugh who is 'Chaos Coordinator' and literal Superhero ( or at least mine ). Surrounded by Santa, 'Santa's Helpers' armed with gifts, wrapping paper, scissors, and tape, to 'Reindeer Wranglers', armed with children and games - this organization humbly reminds you of the true definition of serving.

Mr. Rogers once said, "When I was very young, most of my childhood heroes wore capes, flew through the air, or picked up buildings with one arm. They were spectacular and got a lot of attention. But as I grew, my heroes changed, so that now I can honestly say that anyone who does anything to help a child is a hero to me."

I think when we all grow up our heroes change from fantasy to real life - they wear rolled up sleeves, are dotted in sweat, and believe they can make a difference. But what they may not realize is that while they DO make a difference in the lives and families of those who they serve - they may not realize the difference they make in the lives of their volunteers. And even the volunteers in the lives of LOT employees. And even employees on the LOT Board of Directors.

It's a ripple effect that reminds us each that while there are situations that cannot be controlled, such as terminal family members, unexpected deaths, or auto/home repairs, we can still choose to serve and find the good in giving. Because neither costs a penny yet yields the greatest of rewards: Peace in the Chaos of a Beautiful Life.

So Thank You to each LOT employee, volunteer, and board member. And especially to Susanna, A Super-Wonder Woman of her own making from a simple choice she made to lead by serving.

Remember something else Mr. Rogers said: "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers--so many caring people in this world."

Today, I looked to the helpers during crisis, and was comforted. I pray whatever crisis you may be facing at this difficult time, that you will look for the helpers and be comforted. Afterall, the true gift of the season is acceptance what you cannot change, which bringeth all peace.
